$500, runs. Seems like a decent enough deal to me.

NP, but if you heavy breathing over an Escort, I have some live escorts that likely need your attention as well. Big ones

NO. Just...NO. That was my parents' first car after I was born, and it was an anemic, unreliable piece of garbage. You know a car is catastrophically bad when a Geo Metro is seen as an upgrade.

My very first car. My poor Ford mechanic uncle had to rebuild the transmission twice. Find a manual.

I'm sure she has a dirty past but hoping that new head gasket cleaned it up.

I'd LeMons it!

We've raced a 1991 in LeMons 6 times now. Nothing but respect for the car.

These cars were almost no fun with a stick. They were downright miserable with the automatic. Even the later 1.9 liter cars with the auto were tragically un-fun.
Don't do it. Hold out for an old 323 or Protege. If you want something super cheap but more entertaining than it has any right to be, look for an old Cavalier Z24. The 2.8 and 3.1 weren't the greatest engines, but were better than the Ford CVH by a mile. Build quality was about the same level of terrible as the first gen Escort, but at least the 60 degree engine was a Torquemada in the compact world, and easy to fix too.

That generation of Escort was crap. The 1991+ Escorts were MUCH better.
These were known for regular steering/suspension/alignment issues... not to mention that the rest of the car wasn't that great either. And I noticed in the Ad the head gasket needed replacing recently and it will need tires. Plus, the automatics in these from that era absolutely SUCKED.
In my opinion, if you can drive a manual, any of these cars in your area will be a better bet:

And if you want a car with automatic, these will likely be better bets:

I have seen most of these on Kijiji, I am sort of looking for something to ice race/DD to take miles off my Sonoma.
The Protege and Echo are the leaders on my board. Neither of which is all that fun driving but still more fun than a Sonoma. Might send off a couple emails and see if I can't get the price down!
Thanks for the effort!

For pure driving fun, I'd say the manual Mazda 626 turbo is the best bet.

A $500 escort? The jokes practically write themselves. If you do buy this you clearly have to name it Mercedes or Tiffany and frequently refer to it is "my $500 escort Tiffany".
